What Colt’s new Netherlands 3 data centre and flex technology means for SMEs?
Published by Make Do on February 8, 2013
We recently celebrated the opening of our 20th data centre in The Netherlands. Our Netherlands 3 facility is strategically located between four major European cities and boasts on being the latest of our facilities to house the new Colt ftec data centre, built using flex technology. Colt ftec offers greater flexibility in how you consume power, cooling and space, the three most critical considerations for any data centre requirement. In the past you may have pondered over how you can future proof your data centre requirements and thereby free up capital to use elsewhere? We did, in fact that’s what lead to the development of our next generation of modular data centre we call ‘Colt ftec’. This product has specifically been designed to scale up and down with real-time business needs, so now your data centre can change at the pace of your business both now and long into the future, allowing the concept of future proof data centres to become a reality.
As you know, typically data centre requirements are based on projected compute over 10-15 years. However we all know that planning anything further than two years ahead can be a huge challenge in itself. Colt ftec changes all of this. With flexibility at the heart of its offering you no longer have to predict future compute, just use what you need now and when you require more capacity – simply scale up. The need for speculative investment with such a flexible data centre is removed, this helps you to reduce cost and achieve maximum energy efficiencies even at low usage in a safe and secure environment.
However you might be under the impression that using a data centre is something only undertaken by Enterprise-level businesses. This is not the case and there are many advantages for SMEs too.
Even servers located internally with an SME are cumbersome devices that require power, space and maintenance. By electing to move your data storage to an external space you will not only save on the space and power costs, but maintaining that technology could also prove to be cheaper too. Colt’s data centres essentially provide a purpose-designed space for servers to live in, complete with security, power, cooling and a compliant, regulatory standardised environment.
As a rule SMEs will tend to outsource maintenance when something breaks or a part needs replacing and it can make sense to have some internal IT resource to install software and manage quick-fixes. Shared server space or Co-location could therefore be an answer, where you simply rent the infrastructure, all the day-to-day maintenance can still be managed by you.
The addition of The Netherlands 3 data centre to our portfolio demonstrates the strength of the Colt network across Europe. Depending on where your company is located this means that we can recommend a data centre nearby that can meet your needs with improved connectivity. Not only that, but by moving your data externally you’re opening up the possibilities of increasing your scalability in the future and improving your service provision. Moving to a cloud-based model where you can access your data not only from the office, but also on the move, becomes much easier with a data centre infrastructure behind it.
