Colt achieves gold standard for data privacy and world first for telecoms company
Published by Colt Technology Services on March 10, 2025
Colt has become the first telecoms company – and one of just four companies worldwide – to have reached the highest-possible level of security in the UK and Europe for data protection. Its UK and EU Binding Corporate Rules (BCRs) have now been approved by the regulator, with Colt as a processor and controller. This approval, combined with its existing best-practice global security standard ISO27701, means Colt has become the first telecoms company in the world to reach this rigorous set of security standards – the highest privacy standard for data protection that companies can reach. In practice, it means that Colt customers benefit from the assurance that their data is secured and protected to the same consistent, robust, exacting specifications across the UK and Europe.
The new approval for Colt’s UK and EU BCRs builds on Colt’s previous achievement in 2021, in which it secured approval from the European Data Protection Board for its EU BCRs.
BCRs are internal policies created and adopted by global organisations to make sure that personal data transferred within the business and across borders is compliant with UK and EU data protection laws. Colt has had its BCRs reviewed and approved by the regulator which is a lengthy and detailed process – for example, we’ve had to prove that our BCRs are legally binding and enforced by every Coltie; and we’ve had to make sure they’re fully compliant with the EU data protection principles, and have safeguards in place for data transfers outside the EU. This helps our customers comply with GDPR and other data protection regulations; it deepens their trust with us as a business and demonstrates our unrivalled commitment to protecting their data.
ISO27701 is a privacy standard focusing on Colt’s Information Security Management System or ISMS and the way we manage the privacy of Personally Identifiable Information matching them with security controls. Reaching this standard shows a structured approach to manage privacy requirements, means we achieve compliance with privacy laws and shows our dedication to data privacy.
Approval of UK and EU BCRs combined with our ISO27701 standard provides robust safeguarding for our customers’ data. For more information visit our Data Privacy Information pages on Colt.net.
